This is NOT the greatest war picture ever made. This is NOT the greatest suspense picture ever made. It is NOT the best written, nor the best directed. It is a fairly effective depiction of a person with what amounts to obsessive/compulsive disorder. In fact, The Hurt Locker is old fashioned in many ways. There is no deep examination as to why this specific character does what he does. There are no intensely gory scenes of limbs being blown off (sorry to disappoint some of you). The picture that the Hurt Locker reminds me of is Siegel's "Hell is for Heroes", only instead of a psychopath capable of only killing in war (the McQueen character), we have a character only happy when he's working EOD. And that's it. That's the movie in a nutshell. Bigelow's direction is assured and workman like, but it is NOT Oscar worthy by any stretch of the imagination. The script is also far from flawless(the technical mistakes must be seen to be believed). Which won't stop them from nominating it.
